West Flores
Most visitors never leave the coast, which is a shame. Inland from Labuan Bajo, west Flores rises into forested hills, rice terraces and volcanic highlands with a culture quite different from the beach towns. Day trips from town reach the Cunca Wulang canyon and waterfall, the Batu Cermin limestone cave and the hilltop village of Melo, where Manggarai dancers perform the caci whip fight.
Further east, the mountain village of Wae Rebo, with its conical thatched houses, is reached by a steep trek from Denge and is usually done as an overnight stay. Ruteng, the main highland town, has spider-web rice fields at Cancar and a cool climate. Roads are winding and slow, so allow plenty of time or book a driver.
