Dapur Tara is a cultural food experience in the hills of Liang Ndara, about 20 km from Labuan Bajo on the road to Melo. Founder Elizabeth Yani Tararubi set it up on nearly two hectares of permaculture garden, and guests learn how Flores families have cooked for generations.

There is no menu and no walk-ins. Every visit is booked ahead, and dishes are slow-cooked over fire, some started the night before. The signature is kolo, rice cooked in bamboo over embers, served with smoked chicken and lomak (sweet potato leaves with grated coconut). Each dish is brought out and explained, and traditional cooking lessons and garden walks are available.

It rates 4.9 from about 190 Google reviews. Sessions run Monday to Saturday afternoons; reserve on the website or by WhatsApp, and combine it with a visit to Melo village or Cunca Wulang.

The drive from Labuan Bajo takes about 45 minutes on the Trans Flores road towards Ruteng, climbing into cooler hills. Wear comfortable shoes for the garden walk and bring a light layer for late afternoon. Experiences can be shared or private, and the team can advise on transport from town.

Boats and rooms sell out from June to September. Message the operator early.
