Waerebo Lodge sits among rice terraces at Dintor, on the south coast of Manggarai, the usual overnight stop before the climb to Wae Rebo. It is run by a local team and has simple wooden rooms, a restaurant serving Manggarai home cooking with red rice, and transport from Labuan Bajo or Ruteng.

Packages range from a one-day trek and village visit without an overnight stay, to 2 days 1 night with a night in a cone-shaped mbaru niang house, and 3 to 4 day trips adding waterfalls, rice fields, caves or the island of Nuca Molas (Mules). Custom private itineraries can be arranged.

The trek from the trailhead to the village takes about three hours each way. Book through WhatsApp or email well ahead in the dry season, as village homestay places are limited.

Bring warm clothes, as nights in the village are cold, plus a head torch, rain jacket and cash for donations. The lodge can store excess luggage while you trek. Its coastal location also gives views of Mules island, which can be visited on the longer packages.

Boats and rooms sell out from June to September. Message the operator early.
