Carpenter is a café and small-batch roastery on Jl. Soekarno Hatta that focuses on Indonesian specialty coffee, including beans from the Flores highlands around Bajawa and Manggarai. The baristas work a proper espresso bar and can also brew filter coffee, and the shop sells roasted beans to take home.
The interior is built from reclaimed timber, with a busy open counter at the back. It opens at 06:30, earlier than most cafés in town, which makes it handy before a sunrise trip. Light breakfasts and snacks are available. There is a second branch in the Diamond Hill commercial area near Pantai Pede.
It rates 4.7 from about 650 Google reviews and is open daily until 22:00.
Ask the baristas which Flores origin they are pouring that week, and buy a bag of beans to take home as a souvenir that travels well. The café has seating at the counter and small tables, and it is a reliable place to catch up on email before heading out. Prices are typical for specialty coffee in Indonesia.
Boats and rooms sell out from June to September. Message the operator early.
