Komodo is one of the richest dive areas in the world, where the Indian and Pacific oceans meet. Strong currents bring nutrients and big fish: manta rays at Manta Point and Mawan, reef sharks, turtles and huge schools at sites such as Batu Bolong, Castle Rock and Crystal Rock, and colourful muck and critters in the south.
The currents make some sites challenging, so the dive centre you choose matters. Labuan Bajo has well-run centres for beginner courses as well as advanced divers, with daily trips into the northern and central park, and some run overnight trips to the south. Snorkellers are well served too, with shallow reefs at Kanawa, Pink Beach and Siaba Besar.
Ask about group sizes, guide experience and whether nitrox is available. Visibility and conditions vary by season and by area of the park, and the water in the south can be noticeably colder.
